MOMENTS IN POT CULTURE: DEADLY NIGHTSHADE

Words by Jessica Peace

Agatha Christie showed us just how deadly this dark berried plant is in three of her crime novels and short stories: The Cretan Bull, 1947; The Caribbean Mystery, 1964; The Thumb Mark of St. Peter, 1932.

Created by Steve Englehart and Alan Lee Weiss in 1973, Marvel’s female supervillain Deadly Nightshade will have a bash at takin’ on anyone; amongst her battles she’s had a barney with the Hulk and turned Captain America into a werewolf.

Eighties metalheads Megadeath weren’t shy of a bit of horticulture in their banger ‘Deadly Nightshade’, “...My garden's so inviting, and its/ Deadly blooms are hiding/ Be careful what you touch/ Less the grave is what you lust…”
