MOMENTS IN POT CULTURE: THE FERN

Words by Jessica Peace

Before she gave birth to Peter Rabbit and looked liked Renée Zellweger, Potter was potty about ferns and produced vast studies in pencil and watercolour that were admired by the art and science world at the turn of the nineteenth century.

90 years on, ‘FernGully: The Last Rainforest’ saw a bunch of sexy fairies and a logger (!?) save a forest from ‘Hexxus’, teaching 90’s children about great hair and deforestation. The sequel ‘FernGully 2: The Magical Rescue’ went straight to video (yes, we have watched it).

ROARRRRRRR did ever a film produce so many gardeners? Or at least make us grow-up to want massive leaves in our backyards? After producing ‘The Land before time’ in 1988 Spielberg took the dinosaur thing to another level (‘no expense spared’) in 1993 with ‘Jurassic Park’.
