MOMENTS IN POT CULTURE: THE ROSEMARY

Words by Jessica Peace

In Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote (1605), rosemary is the key ingredient stirred with some wine and salt for Quixote’s healing balm, ‘Fierabras’. It works for Quixote - sort of?! But not so much for poor Sancho.

Ophelia reminds us that rosemary stands for remembrance as she collects the flower for her lover Hamlet, Shakespeare’s Hamlet (1599).

‘Rosemary Rose / Nature sure gave you such a beautiful nose… Carefully sewing on your buttons and bows. / Hoping that someone will be wanting to know, / Of Rosemary Rose...’ the lyrics get weirder but cool tune, cheers The Kinks, ‘Rosemary Rose’ (1968).
