Can’t afford a ticket for the big show down the road? Or just don’t like massive crowds and big hats? Don’t stress mate, get yourself to a Chelsea Fringe event or strut down the King’s Road at Bloom.
WHAT THE F’S THE CHELSEA FRINGE?
The Fringe is like the Chelsea Flower Show backlash, if you think flower shows are a bit poncy, cleeky and blasé about the environment then you’re better off heading to the Fringe. The Fringe has a more DIY, community, ethical and radical approach to all things plant-y.
WHAT TO GET YOURSELF TO?
There’s SOOO much, whether you’re into your bugs and bees, getting arty or you’re looking for something to drag your little people to…
On Saturday, Rainbow Grow are throwing a massive ‘Rainbow Chard Plant-In’,
grab some seed and get record breaking with your Hackney brethren; if you’re looking to get into Japanese culture and up your flower skills, Aya Tanaka is giving an Ikebana workshop; you can also stuff your cake hole at a floral scented ice cream workshop with Kitty Travers of La Grotta Ices.
On Sunday there’s a ‘How Well Do You Know Your Fungi?’ afternoon where you can learn how to grow your own fun guys and all about how important shrooms are. Want something more serene?
Get over to Bromley for Jardinière 19’s ‘The Water Garden’ for plants, ponds and sculpture; but if Civil Disobedience without the fear of getting banged up is up your thing then join Extinction Rebellion’s Protest Tree Planting in Norwood.
Also checkout the ‘Green your Commute’ map and app made by Tfl, basically showing us routes that are quicker to walk than squash on a tube, with a bit of green in between.
More info on all things Fringe HERE, lots of the workshops are ticketed so have a gander at the site before you leave the gaff.
WHAT’S CHELSEA IN BLOOM THEN?
They call it a ‘floral art show’, basically, if you like mincing about West London and some bloody good floristry and design then Bloom will be right up your alley! This year’s theme is ‘Under the Sea’ and it’s gotten us in the mood for sand, sea and playing Morcheeba on repeat. The fun stuff is happening all weekend so get your Binky on and go west.
There’s a real push on the ‘plastic and foam free’ front in our seas and our lives. Bloom we salute you!
WHERE TO STRUT TO?
Well, we’ve dressed up the Jigsaw store so come down and see our stuff - if you like starfish, jellyfish and air plants you’ll lap it up! Give yourself time to have a gander, grab some booze and nosh, and jump on a free rickshaw ride!!!
...See you there xx
