Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree
Happy at home in the rainforest
Our houseplant friends never forget their roots, and they’ll always be the most content when their surroundings mimic their natural environment. Introducing the star of the moment, gracing the pages of every home and lifestyle magazine out there; the one, the only… fiddle leaf fig tree!
The supermodel of the plant world, this instagrammable masterpiece can be trained to grow tall with a luscious mop of hair or left to become a wild child with leaves spiralling seductively up his stem. Like many of you out there, we fell in love with the fiddle leaf fig as soon as we saw him but he’s not done stealing hearts yet.
Don’t turn the spotlights up too brightly for our cover model. Direct sunlight will start to burn him and he won’t thank you for damaging his perfect skin. On the flip side, if he’s in too much shade his leaves will start to shrivel. Don’t worry if he loses a few of his lower ones, though. As the growing pains set in he’ll drop them to make way for new ones, but if the dropping continues and moves higher up you need to check that he’s happy.
What model doesn’t like a drink? When the soil is dry give him a good soaking but always wait for it to dry out again before giving him another. The worst thing you can do is water this houseplant too little or too much in the winter and he’ll throw a tantrum if he thinks you’re treating him badly so don’t ignore him for too long. Wipe his leaves to keep him camera ready, because he’ll get dusty quickly – the peril of having such a big presence! The occasional misting is always welcome as well.
However tasty he is to look at, if your furry friend or inquisitive toddler takes a bite out his leaves they’re not going to feel too well for a while. He’s mildly irritating to the stomach so try and keep him out of reach.
He may have captured your heart but he gave his away long ago. The ficus and the wasp are a perfect pair – in order to pollinate and blossom the fiddle leaf needs the help of a specific wasp. Once he’s got it, that wasp will only ever lay her eggs under his watchful gaze.
