Happy at home in the Amazon
Our houseplant friends never forget their roots, and they’ll always be the most content when their surroundings mimic their natural environment. In a family of hundreds of sisters, how do you stand out? Why, with grace, charm and a little bit of make up.
You could walk past this painted beauty in the Tate and not bat an eyelid; she truly is a work of art. Raised in the Amazon rainforest like queens, calatheas like it warm, humid and light. They can be divas (of course) but damn, are they rewarding in the long run.
A little helping hand - With every houseplant we send out you get a handy little guide to help your new plant live its best life, including where they'll want to live and how often they like to drink.
If you ever forget, just look at her patterns. She’s Amazonian at heart and loves dappled, indirect light to remind her of her past life on the rainforest floor. Shade is actually a plus because those gorgeous canvases fade easily in direct sun. Put her in pride of place in the centre of a sideboard or shelf to frame her glamour for all to see. Warmth is welcomed, and she’ll curl her leaves if she’s feeling a chill.
The Amazon wouldn’t be the lush paradise it is without a hell of a lot of water, which means that this houseplant is a lover of all things wet. Give her a good soaking but wait for the top couple of inches of soil to dry out completely before watering again. And bring that waterfall, baby – mist regularly to keep your girl happy. As an added treat give her big leaves a wipe occasionally to take away any dust that’s gathered and keep her colours bright and shiny.
How could something this pretty hurt a fly? The calathea is blissfully safe for pets or children to have a nibble although she won’t favour you if her leaves gain bite marks overnight.
You'd be forgiven for thinking that someone had painted on this tiger’s stripes – her markings literally look like they've been carefully applied with a brush. As a little bonus, when she raises her leaves you’ll get a cheeky flash of her dark purple underside. Stop staring, you. These sisters don’t bow for any man but by day they open their leaves to honour the sun and by night close them to catch the moon. This is a trait that gained them their nickname – the prayer plant.
