Vetch, one of the sexiest members of the pea family (Fabaceae), you’ll be seeing these beauties on your summer strolls sprawling across verges and river beds - and if you go down to Todd Longstaffe-Gowan’s garden, ‘Battlefields to Butterflies’ at Hampton Court this week you’ll see the purple stuff everywhere.

This one is wild mayyyn BUT you can buy yourself a pack of seeds, plug plants and even mats (!?) made of vetch for your own patch and pots.

Likes sun and is greedy for good, nutrient stuffed soil - likes a good drink too, think river bank.

WE LIKE

‘Hairy yellow vetch’ - for the name obvs and we LOVE ‘purple vetch’ for its luminous almost ultraviolet tones. Rave on.
