START YOUR SPUDS

Words by Jessica Peace

Ever wanted to grow your own spuds?...

TIME TO CHIT

‘Chitting’ is just the process of making your spud produce shoots. In London you can chit now as we are in a cosier part of the UK. You’ll just need to bag some ‘seed’ potatoes.

Place your spuds ‘eyes’ upward in a container – an egg box does the trick nicely and then stick them on your windowsill.

Once your shoots grow to 1cm remove them until you only have three or four left on each spud.

Whack them in the ground or grow sack in March after the frost has passed.
