Happy at home in the desert (except for the odd rainforest rebel)
Our houseplant friends never forget their roots, and they’ll always be the most content when their surroundings mimic their natural environment. This is one pick and mix where you wouldn’t want to put your hand blindly in the bag, because although what you'd find would be a hell of it a treat it’s a prickly one.
Our small cacti come in a multitude of shapes, colours and (you guessed it) spikes, so when you order one of these bad boys we’ll be sure to pick you a character. Most cacti are desert dwellers and are a fan of sunshine, high temperatures and dry air, but there are a few oddballs who escaped to the rainforest for a bit of shade and humidity.
A little helping hand - With every houseplant we send out you get a handy little guide to help your new plant live its best life, including where they'll want to live and how often they like to drink.
Get out your sunglasses and turn up the heat, the cacti are in town! Even though we get rainforest deserters in occasionally we only ever send out the desert loving variety so the rules are always the same; sun, warmth and put down that mister immediately – we see you! You can’t go wrong with putting these houseplants in the middle of a windowsill because they’ll soak up those sunrays. In the height of summer the glass might magnify any glare and cook your little guy, though, so just check on him occasionally to make sure he’s still happy and not fried. If it’s going to get a bit chilly in the winter you might want to bring them in out of the cold before they get frostbite.
The camels of the plant world, cacti are experts at storing water and love to be thirsty. Give your new pal a drink sparingly (we’d suggest every 7 – 10 days as a rule). Get to know how your cactus feels after a drink, because when you’ve quenched his thirst he’ll swell up and become firmer to the touch. If you pick up the pot and it’s light as air, top it up.
Although they’re not toxic, you probably won’t need to worry about whether our armoured friends pack a punch or not because nobody in their right mind would ignore those spiky warning signs. For that reason in itself, maybe place these guys up high to avoid any unwanted injuries.
A spectacularly slow grower, your cactus comes from a long line of oldies – some of their siblings are hundreds of years old. In fact, the little guy we send you will be up to 4 years old but he’s still pint sized (quite literally). Low maintenance, happy to be forgotten about and tough as nails. We’ll take three.
